Hello there! How are you?
Today, they have called me from Microsoft (with an occult number) to tell me that my computer had been sending warning reports for some time because someone was using my computer to do illegal things, and if I didn't do something to stop it they would block my computer in an hour. All this in English (I live in Spain.)
Wow. That escalated quickly. And why do it in English in a country where English isn't the first or the second language?
My computer has been working nicely, I always have my antivirus updated and never go to weird places, so this was very, very strange to me. The woman wanted me to get into my computer and check some things, but I didn't press a single key. Instead, I asked about more information of those reports and the illegal activities, but she didn't give me any answers and repeated that someone was doing illegal stuff over and over again. Then, I asked why they had been waiting for so long to call me, but she gave no details and said "That's why we're calling you right now!". Yeah, you detect someone's using my computer for illegal things and you wait some time to tell me. Not only that, you call ME instead of the police or some kind of authority. Sure thing.
I asked her to talk to someone else, since understanding that woman was a true challenge. I bet my English is better than hers, especially since I had to tell her twice or three times that I wanted to talk to someone else before she understood me. The second person was a guy, and -surprisingly- he talked even worse than the previous one. I ended up asking for a person who spoke in Spanish and they got me to a person who spoke Spanglish (a mixture of Spanish and English.) The only reason I kept talking at this point was to find a contradiction or enough evidence to demonstrate their obvious scam and strongly make fun of the speaker, but I was getting bored of playing along.
The ending?
Me: Look, I am going to hang up.
Guy: Well, your computer will be blocked.
Me: Ok. I don't care
Guy: Well, *angry rambling* motherfucke *hangs up*
Me: *laughs loudly*
An hour has passed and my Thresh shimeji is cutely asleep as I write these lines
I didn't give away any IP information or personal data and did not follow their instructions, so I am safe. I cracked myself up when he insulted me xD I wish I had thought of telling them "I am a Linux user!" when they started with the weird stuff.
Anyways, the reason why I post this is to warn other people (be it English speakers or not) that this scam is coming back once again, since Windows XP support team was shut down and they're trying with Win7/Win10 users. Be careful!
Bye bye! ^^/
