Eight Stained Clues: Chapter 1 - I shouldn't have done that

"What do you think an insane person has on his or her mind? What's going on inside that box, full of surprises? How do their brains work? Humans try to discover the answer for a long time ago. However, they just focus on the subject itself, which is their biggest problem. They think everything started from there, and that's not completely true". Those were the first words my father said before I asked him, a few days before my birthday, when I was nine, what he was talking about. He told me he would explain to me everything the day after I were a year older. I wasn't prepared yet. No matter how many times I asked him, he didn't say anything else. I was very curious and a bit angry, because he never kept secrets. I was impatient to be ten to know what my father had to say, but… he never told me. He couldn't, more exactly. I, although, found out by myself, as I grew up…

Why did a human become insane? That was an easy answer, though as hard to believe as long to tell. Humans were clueless in general, except for a few ones, who created interesting theories, bearing in mind they didn't know about its existence, as far as I was aware. Those humans thought there were two worlds, the one they saw and another one they couldn't see or reach. They also thought that, in the world they imagined, everything was perfect, harmonious; they thought there were gods and those crappy thoughts about superior beings, powerful ones which ruled or moved the world. That wasn't very accurate, but wasn't entirely false at once. You see, I knew the truth, because that was why I lived for, my final goal…

They were right when they said there were two worlds, but there wasn't perfection or peace. Quite the opposite, in fact. There was a place, as big as Earth, closer than humans would think.  That hidden world was "The Shadow World". What was it? It was a reflection of the Real World, like a dark and corrupted version. It was a dark place, where the "shadow beings", as I called them, hid from the sunlight and their opposites. Each time a new human, or a new animal, was born, a new shadow being came out as well at the moment the sun bathed the real one's body with its warn beams. Of course, humans didn't know that, in reality, their shadows were the only clue they had about their dark selves' "existence". They also didn't know that, in their minds, there was a psychological defense that blocked their shadowy version. Didn't I mention it? Shadow beings weren't real, but a reflection, and so they wanted to become actual people. They tried to get into the person's mind and erase its personality, memories… anything that could disturb them, and stay in their bodies. How could a shadow being break that resistant barrier? Well, humans weren't completely stable, so they could feel weak sometimes; for example, when they were really mad, sad or lonely. Their mood weakened that barrier, giving the dark self a chance to break into their subconscious. When the shadow being removed the human's personality, they changed and started to act in a weird way, until other of their species put him or her in a sanitarium. In short, an insane person was someone whose personality was vanished and replaced with the dark self's. Most of the shadow being couldn't control themselves properly, and began acting incoherently. That wasn't a problem at first, but it turned into a huge one that needed a quick and effective solution. That was the origin of my family's "business", if it could be called like that. We were the keepers of that secret, the sweepers of those awful beings that attempted to damage human race. The prize? Nothing… but feeling the world owed you more than one and it wouldn't give anything back. Anyway, I had to do it, whether I liked it. Why?

Because I'd almost disappeared as many other humans did. I didn't know how, but I managed to keep my shadow under control, and I was able to manipulate it as I wanted. I could change its shape, or even solidify it to make a weapon or a tool! As time passed, I learnt that shadow beings couldn't be eliminated using common stuff… They had to be killed with darkness, as they were only that. Unreal things destroyed unreal things. My shadow was the best option for me, so I had it as my weapon of choice, my only way to annihilate those damn monsters. They couldn't steal it, it wasn't touchable, it was always with me, it had no weight… and some other reasons that made it simply perfect.

I could use it since I was ten, but I couldn't keep it under control until I grew up a bit, though it often grew stronger and I lost it even when I was older. I had to live alone… because my… my family was… I remember when it happened… One day my parents were alive, and the next one they were slayed and… my house was destroyed. I had never cried as much as I did that day in my whole fucking life...

It was hard to assume, but it was just a matter of time. I promised I would find who shattered my childhood. That was why I spent the following ten years killing every dark thing that stood on my way, looking for any clues, any detail that led me toward my parents' murderer. I MUST make him or her suffer as much as I did… A slow, painful death… That was all my heart wished for many years. I was sure my parent didn't want me to be so resentful, but… I couldn't help it. Every time I felt down, I chewed my lips to calm down… sometimes, hurting myself in the process. Those ten years were pretty similar, but, one night, everything changed:

I was working out of the town where I moved to, not very far, following a monster that scared the people who were visited and, maybe, got killed later. What I hated the most were large cities: it made my task much harder… Usually, my objectives weren't very clever, but they were quite fast when escaping. I hated playing "Hide and Seek" with them, honestly; playing with humans was much funnier. I sighed: being the only one in charge of those businesses was tough… and pretty stressful. Yes, keeping shadowy beings away from humans was harder when someone was alone; thus, they often were able to attack people in the Real World.

"Ok, hurry up and finish this goddamn mess…", I thought while I turned a corner.
I regretted wearing the clothes I chose for that mission: first of all, an ebony and red checked shirt, with sleeves that just covered half of my arms; it had a white circle-shaped brooch on the left-bottom side, because it was a bit large for me. Second of all, a bit full, black skirt without patterns that reached my knees. For my feet, I had inky, thick boots and thin socks. Finally, I just had a grey hairpin with a white skull on my head… I didn't know it was so cold there, so I was chilled to the bone when I got into that zone. To make it worse, wind was blowing. Although, the height of that crap was wearing make-up.

Another thing I hated, more than "playing" with those monsters, was make-up. I could wear my common clothes, contacts, trousers, long-sleeves shirts, jackets… But that crap was a pain. My skin always itched when I put that thing on; every kind, even lipsticks, made my body itch and forced me remove it when I couldn't put up with it anymore. I had had many scars of serious scratches on my face… Fortunately, they were no longer there. Advantages of being a half-monster…

The buildings were so similar that I thought I was moving in circles. Good luck I didn't spend more than twenty minutes before I felt a "strange thing" coming from a big house half an hour away on foot. I ran straight to that building while a group of humans followed me with their eyes, some of them surprised, others, a bit scared, and others even let out a short scream. Maybe it was because of my pale skin or my purple eyes; I chuckled while I figured what they would be thinking… That day, I forgot my contacts, my scarf and my sunglasses, and I was so nervous due to the itch that I removed my makeup before they saw me.

The news about a creature killing people was a very serious thing: I'd never faced anything like that. Every being I found was a human-like one, or just a human body with the mind of an intruder. Nonetheless… A non-human opponent… It was weird. My heartbeating went faster and a huge excitement pounding in my chest. I smiled: I liked challenges and new things; beating the same guys up bored me to death.

"Calm down, girl… Don't let your feelings get in your way", I murmured as I ran up a steep street.

As I ran, I noticed the streetlamps didn't work and were scratched. Something had broken them, maybe while trying to hunt; the high buildings which were close to the house I was looking for had scratches as well, but those ones were red. A terrible scent came from one of the dead ends… I didn't have a look; it wasn't so hard to guess what I would find there. "Seriously, who the hell goes out when they said on the news that there was a monster around? Some of them just search for their fatal fate…", I thought just before stopping in front of the house. I swore while I covered my face with a hand: it wasn't a house, but an old factory. I had to be more focused…

"Never mind… Just go in", I muttered.

I opened the door carefully, silently… though it was so old that it fell on the floor, making a loud noise that echoed all along the factory. I looked at the metal knob for a few seconds, chewing my lips.

"FUCK!!", I yelled as I threw it in violently. It bounced, making some more noise.

I looked up: the ceiling was falling to pieces. It seemed the owner had taken everything and moved all the machines and furniture to another place. It was completely empty, and silent, except for a broken pipe which was dripping water. It smelt really bad, like… corpse and dried blood. I imagined my objective was having a snack; maybe it didn't hear me after a…

A hiss came from behind. I crouched down quickly and twirled with a stretched leg. I kicked something quite heavy that roared when its head crashed into the dusted floor. I jumped back and watched it, eyes widely opened: it was white, with large claws and teeth, black eyes and no hair. It had four legs, and it looked it could both attack with just two or all of them, and its strength was something to bear in mind, knowing what it did to the streetlamps. I liked my lips with a small grin and giggled. That would be fun.

"C'mon, man, I'm right here!", I told it, making a gesture with my fingers.

It hissed before pouncing on me. I raised my right hand and made my shadow go to the palm, with the shape of a scythe. When it was close enough, I turned the weapon, gathered impulse and hit the being's stomach with the end. It flew up, giving me the time I needed to hold the scythe with both hands and slice that white thing. However, it grabbed the blade and, with an unexpected strength, threw me away. I let out a short shout while flying. Fortunately, I managed to hammer the blade into a thick wall. I looked back and sighed: there was a hole in the furthest wall, and I would have been rolling down a hill if I hadn't been fast.

"Not bad, yo! But… I ain't gonna lose!", I said with a defiant voice.

The scythe turned into its original form before placing itself under my feet. I looked around, though it wasn't anywhere. "Maybe it's escaped…", I said to myself. I didn't think it just ran away after that hard strike. "Where did it go then?"

I felt something strange again. I looked up and…

"Damn i-!", it fell on me. The monster tried to bite me and tear me up with those large, sharp claws.

As a response, I wrapped my fists with my shadow while fighting back and eventually punched it with the solid fists, much stronger than steel. I ran after it and punched it again. Some blood flew to my face; it was red, just like the other ones' I'd already killed. I thought it would be any color which wasn't crimson, but I ended up disappointed. I was expecting an interesting and entertaining fight; nevertheless I thought I built my hopes up…

I changed my mind when it got rid of me incredibly easy. I hit my head with a wall, needed some time to move and, once I wasn't feeling dizzy, followed it. I swore again while running after that demonic "animal". Where was it going?

I discovered it soon: behind the factory, at the top of a hill, there was a large, dark woods. I gasped surprised, glittered my teeth and kept a growl. "It's going to hide in the woods! I have to catch it before I lose sight of it!"

Unfortunately, it was faster than me, and got into it almost a minute before. I knew there was a lot of difference; however, I didn't give up and kept going. When I got up there, I found a fence with a big hole, where I went through without thinking it over. I ran, turned more than once, climbed up some trees and looked among the endless wall of trees place until I realized I got lost. I had a look, panting: I hadn't left anything to use as a guide to come back, I was alone and a monster wanted to eat me. I grinned and crossed my arms. Such a wonderful plan, girl. Good job.

"I have to be less impulsive…", I kicked a stone and growled. My annoyance didn't last for too long, as I heard a noise in front of me.

I could barely see what was going on, but when I noticed I felt chills going down my spine: there was a great amount of shiny eyes staring at my soul. I lost my voice due to the fear that suddenly dominated me. My legs didn't do what I ordered them; they just stepped back slowly as the creatures were approaching. I didn't know how many there were: twenty, maybe thirty.

"Oh my god, oh my gooood…", my hands were shaking. I couldn't use my shadow either. I swallowed thickly while stepping back…

Until my back touched something. I gasped again, more frightened. My breathing was irregular, my heart would break my ribs if it beat faster… I just turned around, very slowly, quietly… My vision was becoming blurry, darker, sounds were lower and lower, and I felt weak. "I thought the trees were a bit further…", were my last thoughts.

When I turned completely, I fainted.

Mature filter because of coarse language. I don't think it's needed, but I'll put it anyway, to avoid problems ^^;

Here's my next story! This time, the topic is... creepypastas!

I should have begun writing it while on Christmas holiday, but I couldn't be doing anything appart from studying...-.-

So... here's the first chapter! I don't know how long it'll be yet. This isn't like The Neo World Ends With You, which had to be seven days. So... I'll just write and finish it when I think it's suitable. Maybe it's shorter than my first one, maybe it's longer (I hope not...)

Who's that girl? Read next parts to know it...

For now, this is the only thing I'll submit related to this story. I've made an image of the main character using a web (felt lazy that day...); maybe I'll upload it tomorrow. Now I have to go to sleep...

:icontherakeplz: (c) whoever wrote the creepypasta.

EDIT: I've changed a few details of the story that I didn't like, or I thought that they were better this way.

EDIT: I update because I'll be posting the final chapter of Eight Stained Clues soon and, since it's been literally months since I updated that story, I'm "reshowing" the previous chapters and stories related to it to refresh memory.</h2>
